Importance of maintenace
A backup power system is a complex system and a big investment that requires proper Maintenace to maintain reliability. Not only does the engine require proper Maintenace but the complete system needs maintained properly so the system operates correctly when the power goes out. Below is some key guidelines to go by when maintaining your backup power system.
Batteries and chargers need checked annually for proper float, gravity and cleanliness to make sure they are operating within spec for a reliability. Every 24-36 Mo it is recommended replacing depending on application. 24 months Life Safety/ 36 months Home Standby
Drive Belts need inspected Annually and replaced every 36/ 48 Months or as needed per inspection.
Coolant needs replaced every 48 Months or per condition of test (PH, Nitrite, Freeze Point)
Oil/Filters Annually or at 250 hours diesel units and 150 Hours Gas
Air Filter as needed or every 3 years rule of thumb "Clean Environment longer life"
Spark Plugs as needed upon inspection and condition.
Transfer Switch located outside needs more attention than inside due to climate. Switch needs cleaned, inspected and lubed on an annual basis to prevent failure.
Choosing A Provider
Key to finding a reliable and qualified provider is to make sure that is their primary focus of business. Just like selecting an Air Conditioning company . You want to make sure the focus is on the equipment and not just in the same realm "Electrical" . It is important to assure the company has technicians with a versatile background on Generators and Transfer Switches. You pay good money for good service so make sure you are getting what you are paying for. Most anyone can spin a filter and change oil but there is more to an inspection than those items, make sure a detailed inspection report is provided so you know each item is being inspected. If a company is offering services a lot lower than the average service providers in the area than there is a reason why. You get what you pay for. Sole reason of service is to help (Prevent) a failure in a power outage. It may run the day of service, but a good inspection will catch a weakness in the system that is still good the day of service but may fail in near future
